The third Unit in the ‘Fightback’ resource focuses attention on the use of sexist language, particularly towards young women. The unit is intended to provoke discussion about the personal beliefs, experiences and practices of students and the way in which sexist language perpetuates gendered stereotypes. The normalisation of sexist language is also explored. The use of the word ‘slut’ – a term identified by the students in the FHS Feminist Collective as a particularly common and intensely gendered slur – is given special attention, particularly with regard to the impact the term has on young women’s sense of equality. The FHS Feminist Collective’s poster ‘Sexism Stings’ features in this latter class.
